Time: 2 hours
Distance: 23 km
Start: Broad Park, North New Brighton
Finish: Same place (it's there and back)
Date: Friday 17th April 2020
Day 24(?) of Covid19 pandemic lock-down (I have lost track). Time to attempt a bike ride to Spencer Park surf club. I set off down Pine Ave and who should I bump into but John, Andree, Rosa and Ben. All on bikes. This was a fortuitous meeting (albeit not entirely co-incidental). We hooned down Marine Parade at high speed and I was soon left far behind, which was mostly the theme of the day (I think I shall call it "social distancing"). This lovely group of people, who I have known for years, are all much faster on bikes than I had expected.
The Southern Pegasus Bay Track actually runs through the dunes from South Shore to Spencer Park but because there were no cars around (weird) we biked along the road to Broad Park. Rather annoyingly (and despite not having rained for weeks) it was drizzling and we soon all had muddy bottoms. The positive side was that virtually no-one else was about and we had the track to ourselves. After 15 minutes the rain stopped and the sun came out. How lovely!
The dune track winds its way parallel to the roaring ocean, up hill and down dale through the pines with glimpses of the Pacific Ocean from time to time. From Broad park it's about 40 minutes before you pop out onto the road 100 meters from the Spenser Park surf club. Not a sole around. We checked out the camp ground and diary. Closed. So we headed back along the same path, straight back home for lunch in our bubbles.
