Distance: 9.8 km
Time: 3 hours and 20 mins
Start: Taylor's Mistake Beach car park
Finish: Same place (it's a loop)
Date: Friday 29th February 2020
We drove over the rickety road to Taylor's Mistake and set off walking to Boulder Bay on the Pilgrims Way Coastal Track. Perfect weather, sunny, calm, sparkling waters below. I remember doing this walk when the kids were little and it seemed like a long way but these days its a nifty hop skip and a jump (40 minutes or so) and before you know it you are descending through the pines to the bay. The row of beachfront baches and the sea-find sculptures are charmingly quirky. Peaking through the windows of Rosy Morn and Stone End is like looking back in time.
A quick ascent on Roberts Road and we were back on the track and on and up the hill (via a quick stop at Scott's hut) to the gun emplacements. Wongi Freak Wilson has added some murals and the whole place has been spruced up a bit.
At the top we got our first glimpse of Lyttleton Harbour. Azure blue with a backdrop of yellow hills. The Breeze Bay Walking Track sidles nicely around rocks to Breezes Col before crossing the road and descending via Black Rock Track back to Taylor's Mistake.
We couldn't resist a swim at Sumner and a coffee and catch-up with Carolien (welcome home!!) at Ocean Beach Cafe.
