Lyttelton: Urumau short loop (via Chalmers Hill Track)

Distance: 5 km
Time: 1 hour and 20 minutes
Start: Lyttelton Information Center, 20 Oxford Street, Lyttelton
Date: Friday 13th December 2019

We met at the Lyttelton Information Center on Oxford Street.  There is a small track that runs along the south side of the building and then some steps to climb onto Sumner Road.  A bit of a dogleg took us onto those pedestrian walkways (Watson's Lane) for a steep climb up the steps to Randolph Terrace and then onto Gilmore Terrace and finally into Urumau Reserve.  The track scrambles up a ridge/spur which is an old lava flow apparently. It's quite steep up to the top and we were buffeted by wind but the views over Lyttelton Harbour are stunning.

Almost as soon as you join the Crater Rim Walkway, there is an unmarked but distinct track (Chalmers Hill track) going off to the left and down the valley through native bush (nice) back to Brenchley Road and Lyttelton township.  Then it was straight to the Lyttelton Coffee Co for a flat white and a natter under the watchful eye of hungry, but tame sparrows.
